What did you get in your stocking?

Christmas is all over again for another year and we want to know, quite simply, what books you received for Christmas? Did you get an ereader of any sort?

Here at the Strange Chemistry lab, we received a handy dandy Amazon voucher, so we have happily pre-ordered the following YA novels coming out soon:

- Cinder by Marissa Meyer

- The Fault in our Stars by John Green

- The End of the World by Derek Landy

- Street Fighter by Simon Scarrow

- Legend by Marie Lu

What do you think of our choices? Any of those you’re also waiting for? Any you’ve already read?

Talk to us about your festive period!

Nothing!
Well, nothing book related. I got some cookbooks and some sheet music, and then lots of other things… I’m actually glad that there wasn’t any reading books in my present pile…it’s overflowing as it is!

Ah, I got some non-bookish items too. I’m fanatical about knitting (when I’m not reading!) and received a number of fun knitting books and projects. Can’t wait to get stuck in :-)

I got an early copy of Cinder and absolutely adored it – you’re in for a treat. And yay for The Fault in Our Stars! :)

My friends and family seem to think I have too many books (ridiculous, I know!) so I didn’t get any.

Why is it people can’t understand that there is no such thing as too many books?!

Great choices! My stocking included the Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness, The Book of English Magic by Philip Carr-Gomm & Richard Heygate and the Wainwright Pictorial Guides box set. I’m reading The Double Shadow by Sally Gardner at the moment.

Amanda

Oh wow! The Chaos Walking trilogy is just amazing – enjoy!

I got the illustrated edition of STARDUST by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess, plus a shiny new ereader which I’m currently loading up with scads of titles. I think I’ve covered all the freebies I want to get; now I need to decide which books to buy!

Amanda

Which ereader did you get? If Kindle then check out the 12 Days of Kindle on Amazon – we have been downloading loads of bargains :-)

The problem with having lots of books (and this fact being known to family and friends) is that I rarely receive books as a present, and so it was this year. :(

Amanda

Use the wishlist function on Amazon all year, make sure you keep it updated and then, when people ask you for your Christmas list, just send it out to everyone. Then sit back and wait for books! :-D

I tried that. I sent the link to my brother pointing out that I would love any of the books on the list. But alas, he got me a gift card for a restaurant that isn’t even within an hour drive. What ill luck!

I received a few book and bookish things this year under the tree and in my stocking. This year I got:

Scorpio Races – Maggie Stiefvater
Jessica’s Guide to Dating On The Dark Side – Beth Fantasky
Matched – Allie Condie
Unearthly – Cynthia Hand
The Poison Diaries – Maryrose Wood
Pretty Little Liars #10, Ruthless – Sara Shepard
Plus some bookish gift cards which I plan to do some serious damage with!

I also got an Android Acer Tablet to replace my Kindle. Very excited to put my first book on there.

As for the books you got, I just finished Cinder and fell head over heels in love with it. I’ve got Legend sitting on my bookshelf still to be read, but I’ve only heard fantastic things about it, and cannot wait to dive into that one.

What a haul! We loved Matched and The Poison Diaries is very cool as well. Ooh, Unearthly *starts twitching towards Amazon again*

From the comments I can’t wait until Cinder appears on my Kindle and I can get stuck in :-)

I got two books in Norwegian this year:
-Natthagen (The Night Garden) by Knut Faldbakken. A Norwegian Crime writer.
-Vikingblod: Spor av Vikinger i Nordvest-England (Viking Blood: Traces of Vikings in North-West-England) by Stephen Harding and Stig Vaagan. Non-Fiction.

And since it’s difficult for my family to buy English books for me, I got myself three books while doing my Christmas-shopping in Oslo:
-The Dead Zone by Stephen King
-Excession by Iain M. Banks
-Department 19 by Will Hill

I’m pleased with what I got this year :-)

Amanda

You don’t need another telling from me about how awesome Department 19 is, do you? :-p

Weirdmage

Nope! It’s the reason I bought it in the first place :-)

Sadly, this Christmas sucked for books. Only one!! *pouts* I ordered Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake. Now I’m wildly reading The Clockwork Angel so I’ll be free to read it when it arrives.

Anna Dressed in Blood is a damn fine *only one* book, though – we hope you enjoy!

I, too, suffered a self-imposed book famine this year – although I did get an awesome leather-bound book of hand-made paper for my new journal.
I still have 30 books on my to-read shelf, and about the same unread on the kindle, so I need to do some catching-up, and I need to do some very directed reading this year.

I gave myself an Xmas gift of the re-released as ebooks Lyra series by Patricia C. Wrede. I’d missed out on them back in the 80s when they were in print, so am thrilled to have them as ebooks so that I can catch up on what I’ve missed out on.

I got a lot of books, but they’re from my book club friends because they know what to give me. :) Like:

The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen
Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett (such a thick book, I can’t even)
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs (got this from a Book Blogger exchange yay!)
The Boy Book by E. Lockhart

I’ve pre-ordered The Fault In Our Stars too, but that was before Christmas. :) I cannot wait to read it!

I’m still waiting for the 80 inch lcd tv to appear in my stocking. Alas, I think Santa’s running late or forgot about that on my list. =(

In the meanwhile, I’ve been revisiting NPR’s top 100 sci fi/fantasy classics to fill in any gaps I’ve missed. Finished 1984, reading Handmaid’s Tale.

We did a gift card exchange this year, so I was happy to be on the receiving end of some B&N gift cards. I’m tempted to spend it all right now, but am pacing myself one or two books at a time. :)

I didn’t get any books in my stocking. My friends and I do a themed exchange every year since our hubs aren’t exactly stocking stuffer masters. BUT, I did get a bookish plaque that says… ” Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” –Albus Dumbledore. And it’s super fun. Also on a bookish note, I got a really great homemade bookmark featuring our theme… Starry Night painting by Van Gogh. I also got an owl ring, a sleep mask, a handy dandy grocery bag handle, and of course, an orange.

I received The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith and Darkness Falls by Cate Tiernan the second in her Immortal Beloved Series.

I also received some money and I’m considering buying a Kindle Fire. I don’t need all the bells and whistles, but I like that I can see the cover in color. I’m just not sure. I so love holding a book in my hand. The weight, the feel of the page, the smell. I suppose I could order the books I really love in hardback. I’m just so reluctant to switch!!

I didn’t receive anything in my Christmas stocking this year! Our family doesn’t bother since we buy everything we want/need ourselves throughout the year anyway haha.

Random House Australia did send out gifts though! I received Dearly Departed by Lia Habel which I LOVED and Caroline from Simon & Schuster AU also sent me a signed hardcover of Silence by Becca <3 Received a few other books here and there but anyway.. ;)

~The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
~The Probability of Miracles by Wendy Wunder
~Past Perfect by Leila Sales
~Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

I also got some Barnes and Noble gift cards so I can get some new books for my Nook, which I got for Christmas the previous year.

Also yay for Cinder and Legend! Both of those books are FABULOUS! :)

Working in a book shop means that I tend to be the one giving books as presents rather than the other way around, but over the festive period I treated myself to lots, including Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch and Wither by Cassandra Clare.

I also read some great proofs, like Dee Shulman’s Fever (it’s got Roman soldiers and time travel and is therefore awesome), so it’s been a good year for books for me!
