New Year’s Reading Resolutions?

The fireworks have now gone off all over the world and we are now, together, all in 2012.

This is often a time to think ahead, to wonder what it is we are capable of achieving – and to make resolutions. And, as readers, I’m pretty sure some of those resolutions will involve reading.

Our own reading resolutions are as follows:

- to read 100 books (this has been the same challenge as the last two years, although it might prove more difficult now that the job includes reading as well…)

- to re-read the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan in preparation for the final novel being released (hopefully at the end of this year)

- to read the Vampire Academy series.

- to keep up with YA debuts in 2012

They are not many, but I’m sure will keep me occupied!

So, tell us, what are your reading resolutions? Have you a set number of books to read? Is there a series you are desperate to read but haven’t tackled yet? Have you joined any of the Reading Challenges hosted by bloggers this year?

Read as many books as possible.

To learn that if I am not enjoying a book I Can give up on it and just start on another rather them spend weeks trying to force myself to read a book I not enjoying.

I have exactly this problem too.

I’ve given up on exactly 2 novels in my reading life but I’ve spent countless weeks trying to ‘just reach the end’ of a story.

Good strategy. I usually have ‘breakpoints’ at 30 pages and 100 pages.

I’m aiming to read 180 books which seems a lot but is only 4 more than this year. I think that’s going to be my limit unless I win the lottery and can give up work.

I’ve signed up for a couple of challenges but nothing that is much of a resolution, one is a Terry Pratchett one which gives me a good excuse to re-read some. I ‘m also hosting a sci-fi challenge so that should encourage me to hunt out new books too.

I’ve set myself a goal of reading 200 books this year, as well as getting up to date on the following series:

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher – on Book 5 at the moment.
The Culture Series by Iain M. Banks (Only recently finished the first one)
Read more Young Adult novels.
Finish the Hunger Games Trilogy.
Finish A Song of Ice and Fire. (Halfway through A Clash of Kings)

That should keep me busy for most of the year. It’s look set to be a fantastic one, reading wise.

I’m trying to avoid setting myself any reading resolutions for fear that it will detract from my focus on Euro-tripping.

The only resolution I am allowing myself is to try and read only fresh material.

Between not having access to my (absolutely stuffed) bookshelves back home and the massive backlog of Angry Robot titles I’ve already built up, this shouldn’t be too hard to keep.

Although after seeing you mention the final Wheel of Time book, I’m probably going to have to jump back into that series at some point. Damn life is hard ;)

A Great Re-Read of the Wheel of Time series does seem like a most audacious and appropriate plan. Further plans include reading the first 3 novels in the Dune series, read Downbelow Station, and of course, absolutely devour William Gibson’s upcoming collexion of essays and short-stories.

I want to target my reading better this year, and to push out into writers I haven’t read before rather than sticking with a ‘safe’ read :)

I love that one of your resolutions is to read the VA series :) One of mine is to read 100 books as well, I doubt I’ll make it as I’m at uni!

I’m signed up for the DAC, Dystopian and Comteporary YA Challenges this year so hopefully that’ll help me along on my goal of 100!

All these target book numbers are scaring me! Haha. I read 78 books in 2011. (My original goal was 50.) So I think this year my reading goal will be 80 books.

One series I do want to get a start on (finally) is Meljean Brook’s steampunk romance series!

I made a couple of reading resolutions:
- to start my Brandon Sanderson Bible. I don’t read The Wheel of Time (could never get into it) and since his next (solo) novel to come out isn’t until 2013 I figure I should be able to have it mostly completed.

- not necessarily to read more (I read 209 books last year, not including the novellas not listed on Goodreads and the graphic novels I read), but to reader smarter. Now that I’m working FT, I can’t read everything I receive for review like I could when unemployed. So I need to prioritize better

- Organize my books (again) and get a new bookshelf.

- lobby for my library to buy new books that have been published in the last 15 years so that all the new interesting books aren’t just the ones I’ve donated

I’m aiming to read 180 books and to make sure I read one non-fiction book every month.

My goals are:
-Read at least 65 books.
-Finish my Roald Dahl Challenge
-Get my to be read list/pile cleaned out. I own way too many books that I haven’t read yet.

Finish my to-read pile before I make another pile. It’s at 19 right now, so I’m trying to read them all before June.

My goal is to read 100 books in 2012. I made it in 2011 (just barely) but some of those were picture books. This year they don’t count. :)

My reading resolutions are (unofficially) to read 75 books by the end of the year. I’m hoping for another 100, the same as I did this past year, but I figure it’s better to aim for 75 and surpass myself than aim for 100 and fall short. Life does have an annoying habit of getting in the way of my reading, after all. :)

This year I will:
- try to read 100+ books by the end of 2012,
- try to keep my TBR pile under control (still hmmm’ing about this one), and
- Read the Percy Jackson series!

I signed up for the Just Contemporary Reading Challenge and my goal is to read 50 contemporary ya and mg books. Now, you may think that’s a lot, but I have just about that many already on my shelves waiting to be read.

I try to keep up with the debut authors, there are 16 releases in January that I want already, not all debuts though.

My goal is to read 112 books this year. I read 125 last year.

I also joined the “A Million Pages” group in Good Reads so I’ll be adding up my pages and adding to that goal. I don’t expect to reach one million pages any time soon!

I joined a lot of challenges last year and didn’t do well so I’m sticking to this one this year, but I cannot give up my paranormals. I must space out the contemporaries with the paranormals.

And lastly I WILL read Jellicoe Road this year! I will no matter how confusing it is! I hear the payoff in the end is great.

All that being said, I highly recommend A Million Suns, the sequel to Across the Universe by Beth Revis as a good way to start the new year!!

My reading resolutions are to read 100 books, that’s only 7 more than last year, to catch up on my backlog of read, but unreviewed books, to dent my TBR-pile, to read more YA, SF and historical fiction and to comment more on the blogs I follow!

I haven’t joined any reading challenges, as I learned last year that I always forget to post the links anyway ;-)

I’m going to try and read 100 books this year too. I’m super excited about becoming a reading buddy with another blogger and having a friendly competition with her to see who can read more. Winner buys the loser a book :)

You haven’t read the Vampire Academy series? It’s amazing and is one of my favourite series!

I’ve joined the DAC again this year so that will help me keep up with YA debuts. I’ve also joined the Standalone Reading Challenge so that I’ll read more standalones and the Sophomore Reading Challenge which challenges you to read books by authors who are releasing their second books this year.
